Simeon Stylites (400–459)
Hermit
This Syrian ascetic is the saint who produces the greatest sensation of extravagance.
Biography
He submitted to cruel penances and the fame of his holiness was so great that, looking for a way not to be bothered by curious onlookers, he settled in the middle of the desert on top of a column, where he remained for thirty-seven years as a solitary lookout. However, he did not forget his brother men and from this uncomfortable place, he preached to the crowds, resolved disputes and advised sovereigns.
