Theodore Romža, bishop and martyr (1911–1947)

Greek-Catholic bishop of Mukachevo and martyr of communism, Teodoro Romža supported his Church when the Soviet regime sought to separate it from Rome.
Biography
Trained at the Gregorian University, he was ordained a priest in 1936 and served in mountain villages before teaching philosophy and spiritually directing seminarians. Consecrated bishop in 1944, he visited parishes, encouraged persecuted clergy and refused to abandon communion with the Holy See. After surviving an arson accident, he was poisoned in hospital on November 1, 1947.
