Teresa of Calcutta (1910–1997)

Religious sister, missionary, and foundress

Mother Teresa was born in Skopje and entered religious life as a young woman.

Biography

While teaching in India, she experienced what she called a “call within a call”: to serve Christ in the poorest of the poor. She founded the Missionaries of Charity, whose members care for abandoned, sick, dying, and unwanted people in many countries. Her public life of charity was accompanied by a long interior trial in which she remained faithful despite feeling God’s absence. She urged Christians to recognize Jesus in every suffering person and to do small things with great love.

Practical advice

Look attentively today at someone who is ignored and offer that person a simple service as if you were caring for Christ himself.
