Thomas More (1478–1535)
Layman and martyr
Thomas More was an English lawyer, statesman, husband, father, scholar, and man of prayer.
Biography
As Lord Chancellor, he served King Henry VIII with competence but refused to recognize the king as supreme head of the Church in England. He resigned rather than act against his conscience and later endured imprisonment in the Tower of London. Remaining loyal to lawful civil authority while placing God first, he was beheaded in 1535. His life shows that professional excellence, family affection, public service, good humor, and heroic fidelity can belong to one Christian vocation.
