December 19
Urban V, pope (1362–1370)
Pope
This pope, born in Grisac, France, is one of the seven popes who, from 1309 to 1377, resided in Avignon.
Biography
In 1367 he decided to return to Rome, but was back in France in September 70, despite the protests of Saint Brigid. He died a few months later. Knowing that Christ had not died in a palace, he had himself transported to a modest house in the city and ordered that the door be left open: "So that anyone can see that a pope also knows how to die as a good Christian."
