Victor, Pope (2nd century)

Pope

Some sources indicate that Victor may have been the first African Pope, although this claim is based mainly on his origin.

Biography

His date of birth is not known precisely; He was a native of Africa and his pontificate took place at the end of the second century.

During his government the use of Latin began to spread in the Church of Rome. His pontificate coincided with the reigns of Commodus and Septimius Severus, a period in which Christianity also advanced among distinguished Roman families. Thanks to Marcia's intervention before the emperor, several Christians sentenced to forced labor in the mines of Sardinia were able to regain their freedom.

Victor promoted the celebration of synods to unify the date of Easter. The controversy pitted the Roman practice of celebrating it on Sunday with the custom of some communities in Asia Minor of observing it on the 14th of Nisan, whatever the day of the week was.
