Vilibald (700–780)
Bishop
Born in Wessex, England, he was a descendant of the Saxons who had invaded England in the 5th century.
Biography
He was the first Englishman to visit the Holy Places; His pilgrimage lasted seven years and was narrated under the title of Hodoeporicon, a story that is still preserved. Upon his return he became a monk in Montecassino and was ordained a Priest in the year 738 by his cousin Saint Boniface, in Germany. Vilibald was bishop of Eichstätt, Bavaria for forty-four years.
