Vilmos Apor, martyr (1892–1945)

Hungarian bishop known as “the parish priest of the poor,” Vilmos Apor defended the persecuted and needy during World War II.
Biography
He denounced unjust laws against Jews, organized aid and sheltered numerous people. When Soviet soldiers tried to take women hidden in the basement of his residence, he stepped in to protect them and was shot several times. He died on Easter Monday as a result of his injuries, consummating with his life the defense of human dignity.
