Virginia Centurione Bracelli (1587–1651)
Founding widow
Genoese widow and founder, Virginia Centurione Bracelli turned her house and assets into a network of mercy for the poor, sick and vulnerable women.
Biography
Married by family decision, she patiently endured her husband's disordered life and cared for him until he died reconciled with God. At the age of twenty she was widowed and raised her two daughters without abandoning prayer or social assistance. During wars and epidemics it welcomed homeless people and organized home visits. She founded the Hundred Ladies of Mercy and communities dedicated to the Poor of Jesus Christ.
