Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Blessed Virgin

This festival was first observed by the friars minor in the 13th century and spread to the Western world since 1389.

Biography

At the same time that the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary the Incarnation of the Son of God, he gave her the news that her relative Elizabeth, sterile and elderly, had in her womb, six months ago, a son destined to be the Precursor of the Messiah. Mary, full of grace and animated by the Holy Spirit, set out without delay to visit her. He marches quickly, because he feels in his gut - First Corpus Christi Procession - the presence of the Guest, and that sweet weight puts wings at his feet. "How beautiful are the feet of the messenger who announces peace on the mountains." Indeed, imagining Mary along those arid roads, in the flowery spring of her fifteen years, carrying the divine Secret in her womb, jumping and flying on the wings of joy and love, is a lyrical image without equal. He arrived at a city in the mountains of Judea. Tradition points to Ain-Karim as that city of Judah. Mary entered the house of Zacarias, Elizabeth's husband, and greeted her. And it happened that the child that Elizabeth was carrying in her womb leaped for joy and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, exclaimed: "Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Who am I that the mother of my Lord should come to see me? As soon as your greeting reached my ears, the child leaped for joy in my womb. Blessed are you who have believed, because what was announced to you from the Lord will be fulfilled." And a song of humility and gratitude is born from the lips of Mary the Magnificat, which introduces a new system of values. This song is a summary of the Bible, a synthesis of the history of salvation. It announces the true revolution, not that of men, but that of God. The Virgin of the Visitation, walking quickly, is a fascinating image. First he said "yes" to God. Then that "yes", converted into a message, is shared with others. The Annunciation is what has happened to Mary. The Visitation is what Mary makes happen in others, through her promptness, generosity and trust.
