Charles Lwanga, Matthias Mulumba Kalemba, and 20 Companions
Martyrs
Charles Lwanga and his companions were young Christians at the royal court of Buganda, in present-day Uganda.
Biography
During the persecution ordered by King Mwanga II, they refused demands that violated their faith and human dignity. Some were still catechumens; Charles baptized several of them as death approached. Between 1885 and 1887, Catholics and Anglicans alike suffered martyrdom. Their witness showed that the Gospel had taken deep root in Africa: they forgave their persecutors, prayed, and remained faithful to Christ despite torture and death. They are honored as patrons of youth and of the Church in Africa.
Practical advice
