Philemon, Apollonius and Arienus (3rd century)

Martyrs

Martyrs sacrificed in Egypt during the rule of Emperor Diocletian.

Biography

Apollonius had left the Thebaid desert to help the persecuted Christians. When the pagan Philemon met him, he told him: “You are crazy for having left the desert, where you were safe, and for coming here, exposed to death at any moment!” The answer he received from Apollonius' lips moved him in such a way that he asked to know more about Christ; He soon became a Christian. His conversion had resonance, since Philemon was well known for his reputation as an extraordinary flutist. The two friends appeared before Judge Arieno. Apollonius again spoke so eloquently of Christ that the judge was also converted. They brought the three before the governor, and he, out of consideration for Arienus, sentenced them to the lightest penalty, that is, to death by drowning.
