Joseph Pignatelli (1737–1811)

Jesuit priest

From a noble Neapolitan and Aragonese family, and born in Zaragoza, Spain, José entered the Society of Jesus just when it had been expelled from Spain by King Charles III.

Biography

He lived in Italy, without resources, and was reduced along with his companions. He carried out great activity in Ferrara and Bologna, reorganizing the Company, of which he would soon become provincial. In such adverse times, he was the serene, strong and prudent man, spiritual above all, charitable in a legendary way and tenacious as a good Aragonese. Tall, very skinny, with a long face, with a big nose. The sunken and toothless mouth could seem like a caricature of a Machiavellian Jesuit, but in reality he was a harmonious mixture of the son of Saint Ignatius and the wise man of the 18th century. He was very pious, courteous and affable, distinguished in his bearing and learned in antiquities, a great connoisseur of languages and a lover of books. It can be said that he was enlightened in holiness.
