Teresa of Ávila (1515–1582)
Carmelite nun
Teresa of Jesus entered the Carmelite monastery in Ávila and, after years of spiritual struggle, was drawn into a profound friendship with Christ through prayer.
Biography
She worked courageously to renew Carmelite life in poverty, fraternity, and contemplation, founding monasteries despite opposition, illness, and difficult journeys. Her works—including The Book of Her Life, The Way of Perfection, and The Interior Castle—teach prayer with realism, wisdom, and good humor. Teresa understood holiness as determined friendship with the One who loves us and became the first woman declared a Doctor of the Church.
Practical advice
Today, persevere for a few quiet minutes in prayer even if you feel distracted, remembering that holiness is built in ordinary life.
