Theodora (†304)
Secular
The virgin Theodora, after being taken to the court in Alexandria, Egypt, was interrogated by the prefect called Proculus, because she had to sacrifice to idols.
Biography
By refusing to do this, he would be condemned to dishonor. But the prefect, feeling pity for his youth and bravery, gave him three days to think about it. Teodora remained unwavering in her decision and was sentenced to be taken to a brothel. The soldier who took her and who had attended the hearing said as soon as he arrived: “Come, I am the first,” and when they were alone, he said, “Give me your veil, take my uniform, get out and run away quickly.” Theodora came out dressed as a soldier while Didymus faced the other soldiers, telling them: "Look who you are facing, I am the Christian Didymus. God be blessed for having allowed me to remove the virgin Theodora from your lust and now be able to await the crown of martyrdom." Brought to court, he was condemned by Proculus to beheading and Saint Ambrose states that, having learned that Didymus was going to trial, Theodora ran to present herself to Proculus, who made her share the fate of her benefactor.
Practical advice
Today, in the presence of God, he calmly defends a truth that others prefer to keep silent without seeking applause or recognition.
