Catherine of Siena, Virgin and Doctor of the Church (1347–1380)
Virgin and Doctor of the Church
Catherine of Siena, a Dominican tertiary, united an intense life of prayer with fearless service to the Church and to people in need.
Biography
Though she had little formal education, her spiritual wisdom drew disciples and correspondents from every level of society. She cared for the sick, worked for peace among divided cities, and urged Pope Gregory XI to return from Avignon to Rome. Her Dialogue and letters reveal a profound love for Christ crucified, the Eucharist, and the Church. She died in Rome at the age of thirty-three and was later declared a Doctor of the Church.
Practical advice
As an offering to the Lord, pray for the Pope, the bishops, and priests, and end with a brief act of thanksgiving.
