Ephrem, deacon and doctor of the Church
Bishop and doctor of the Church
(306-373) He was born in Nisibe of Mesopotamia, modern-day Iraq, in the year 306.
Biography
Little is known about his childhood. Some historians believe that his parents were Christians because only Christians used to give biblical names to their children. As an adult, Efrén placed himself at the service of the Bishop of Nisibe, who was the holy man James, and he was commissioned to open a School in which the Holy Scriptures would be taught, especially. There Efrén began to write his famous writings called: "Carmina Nisebina". Ephrem saved the city of Nisibe from plunder and death, threatened by the Persian king Shapur. Ephrem prayed and fervently asked for the city. And the night before the looting, the Lord sent such a quantity of insects to the besieging soldiers that it forced them to flee hastily. In Edessa he founded another Bible school that greatly influenced all those areas. Even the most ignorant people cited the Holy Scriptures, because they knew it by heart. Efrén, above all, is a poet, a most inspired poet like few others have existed in the entire history of humanity. He composed many hymns and precious commentaries on the Virgin Mary, especially on the Immaculate Conception. He has well deserved the title of "Singer of the Immaculate Virgin." Charity burned in his core. He gave everything he had to the poor. As an old man he began to build a hospital for his fellow citizens of Edessa. Despite being simply a deacon, he served as a priest, Bishop and Pope, since his influence on the Church of his time was not surpassed by anyone. He holy flew to heaven in the year 373.
