August 28
Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (354–430)
Bishop and Doctor of the Church
Augustine was born in North Africa and searched passionately for truth, passing through ambition, moral struggle, and mistaken philosophies.
Biography
The prayers of his mother Monica, the preaching of Ambrose, Scripture, and God’s grace led to his conversion and baptism. He became a priest and then Bishop of Hippo, serving through preaching, controversy, pastoral care, and an immense body of writing. Works such as the Confessions and The City of God continue to illuminate the mystery of grace, the human heart, the Church, and the search for God. Augustine taught from experience that the restless heart finds peace only in the Lord.
Practical advice
Without seeking recognition, correct charitably a fault that should not be ignored, without leaving until tomorrow the good you can do today.
