Benedict, Abbot (c. 480–547)

Benedictine abbot

Benedict of Nursia withdrew from the distractions of his age to seek God in prayer.

Biography

Disciples gathered around him, and he eventually founded the monastery of Monte Cassino. His Rule shaped Western monastic life through a balanced rhythm of prayer, work, study, obedience, hospitality, and community life. Benedict did not propose dramatic feats for the few, but a wise school of the Lord’s service in which people could grow through perseverance and daily conversion. The Church honors him as a patron of Europe.

Practical advice

In the middle of your ordinary work, prepare carefully for a conversation in which you must guide someone, and begin again humbly if it does not go well.
