February 2
Presentation of the Lord
Feast
This ancient feast, also called Candlemas, is celebrated forty days after Christmas.
Biography
Its center is the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and his encounter with Simeon and the prophetess Anna. Mary takes part by carrying Jesus in her arms and humbly fulfilling the law, even though neither she nor her Son needed purification. Simeon recognizes the Child as light for the nations and glory for Israel, while also foretelling that he will be a sign of contradiction. The candles carried in the liturgy express Christ’s light and invite believers to let that light enter, transform, and guide their lives.
Practical advice
As an offering to the Lord, give your time first to the person who needs it most, with outward order and inner recollection.
